On-page SEO doesn’t have to be a complicated task. Here’s how you do it!
So… on-page seo… what’s it all about?
Well, before we get to that, if you’ve read my last couple of blog posts, you should have a good idea of how to start filling your blog with good relevant content. Now, you have something interesting and passionate to talk about… not just a site full of boring facts.
But the bottom line is this. It doesn’t matter how good your writing is, if nobody see’s it, what good will it do? Increasing your blog traffic now becomes your next priority. Blog traffic through on-page seo will be one of the lifelines of your blog.
One of he best ways to increase your relevancy to the search engines is using good on-page seo.
So where do people go to find all the good information that you’re putting out? The most popular places are Google, Yahoo. and MSN. But, to get people to find your posts when they go to these sites, these search engines must find your information relevant. When the search engines find your blog relevant, they’ll give you high rankings, which means your blog will be among the first that people will find.
So… just in case you’re spanking brand new and aren’t sure what on-page seo or search engine optimization is all about… simply put, it’s when your blog gets top rankings on search engine result pages.
On-page seo is not the easiest thing to master, but is by no means as complicated as it sounds. There are very simple on-page seo techniques that once you learn, you can apply every time you write a new blog post. And just so you know… it all starts with learning how to use “keywords” properly.
So lets start by figuring out what keywords you want to use to optimize your blog with on-page seo. Here’s what I mean. Let’s say that your blog is not branding YOU, but is about tech gadgets. You’ll start by checking with Google to see how competitive that keyword is.
I took a pause while writing this just to see what the search results would be. I went to Google and found that there were 8,020,000 search results for the keyword “tech gadgets”. If you think you can rank for a keyword with that much competition… especially when you’re new… think again.
So what we have to do is narrow down our scope. Next, let’s restructure our search to “technological gadgets”. This time, I came up with 577,000 results. You can see how restructuring the wording just a tad made a huge difference. Now we have a keyword phrase to use with our on-page seo that’s a lot more manageable and will be much easier to rank for.
The first thing you need to pay attention to with on-page seo is the title of your blog. Ideally, for the best results, you want to have the phrase in your blog title as well. Here’s what I mean. A line like “Your Best Technological Gadget Blog” is a great example of including your keyword phrase in your blog title. This comes in most handy when you’re creating a “niche mini blog” which is a blog specifically about a particular product.
In addition, you want to put your keyword phrase in the headings of your blog post. This is very easy to do as you’re writing your post. If you’re not sure how to do this… watch the video in this post.
Including everything mentioned here so far lets the search engines know exactly what your blog and your posts are about. So when you’re focusing on on-page seo, remember to include your keyword terms whenever you can. And be sure to continue sprinkling your keyword phrase within your post where ever it can make sense. Frequent occurrences of your keywords in your blog post will again, give the search engines information about the relevancy of your blog topic.
But keep this in mind, and this is the most important statement of all. Remember that you are writing for real people who are reading your blog to get the information they need. So, don’t spam your blog post with your keywords! Doing that can cause your blog to actually drop in rankings rather than rise.
This is Part 1 of on-page seo. To get more basics on this topic, look for parts 2 and 3 over the next few days.
